Steve Henderson is the Director of Private Investments and Foundation Strategies at Heritage Wealth Advisors. He joined Heritage shortly after the team recognized the potential for client growth by expanding their services to include alternative investment strategies. With over 35 years of investment experience, and previously serving for over a decade as the Director of Investments at The Spider Management Company, Steve was more than equipped to take on the challenge of developing a platform for clients to supplement their existing portfolios.
In working with investors, Steve emphasizes the importance of treating partnerships with General Partners (GPs) like marriages, as the right relationships will last for decades. Steve goes the extra mile to meet with entire teams, having dozens of meetings every month with firms and using his best judgment to determine a good fit.
Ensuring GPs employ good people and enforce rigorous checks and balances within their operations is only part of the puzzle. Steve emphasizes that an understandable, repeatable investment process and a proven track record are key in investing in a GP.
As he rounds out his career, Steve values the entrepreneurial and competitive angles his role provides. He also enjoys continuing to grow in his skillset and working alongside the team. Steve attributes Heritage’s terrific company culture to the team’s diligence in creating it, and is proud to know that it will lead to an even brighter future for both the team and their clients.
Steve is also a member of Heritage’s Investment Policy Committee and is heavily involved in investment strategy, asset allocation and implementation, as well as manager due diligence.
In addition to his prolific investment career, holding positions at both the University of Richmond and the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), Steve also has a passion for non-profits and serves as the Investment Chair for the VCU Investment Management Company and is a trustee at the Steward School. He’s been involved with the Steward School since 2006 as a member of the finance committee, only taking a brief hiatus to avoid conflicts of interest with his position at the University of Richmond.
Steve earned his B.A. from the University of Richmond, and an MBA in finance from George Washington University. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®).
Having met his wife of over 35 years at the University of Richmond, and raising their three daughters in Virginia, Steve’s life is all about his family and Richmond is his home. Being born and raised in Philadelphia, he still keeps up with Philadelphia sports and enjoys golfing and visiting the beach with his family in his free time.
